Lerner bias blatantly obvious

Media reacts to Lois Lerner’s new email: ‘Hard to argue’ no political bias there

Changing tunes.
In emails released by House investigators on Wednesday, former IRS official Lois Lerner was revealed in emails to have had a pretty negative opinion of activist conservatives – precisely the type of person who might have applied to her division for tax-exempt status for their newly formed political action committee only to encounter discrimination. How […]

Former Clinton Press Secretary Ensures Blackout of Book

Former Clinton administration press secretary Mike McCurry is quietly waging a campaign to quash coverage on a new tell-all book that exposes Bill and Hillary Clinton’s massive political empire.
McCurry has successfully blocked Politico media reporter Dylan Byers from writing about the bestselling Clinton, Inc., written by Weekly Standard editor Daniel Halper, according to emails obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.
McCurry, who spoke to Halper, now claims that he “only vaguely remembers” the interview. In the emails, McCurry tells Byers to abandon an article about the book.
McCurry is just one of several Clinton loyalists who have urged the mainstream media to boycott Clinton, Inc. and not conduct further reporting on many of the revelations contained in the book.
Byers reached out to Halper on July 25 to say that he “got a call from Mike McCurry,” who expressed anger over the book and denied being a source for it.
“I got a call from Mike McCurry who says he only vaguely remembers talking to you briefly for the book, and pretty much slams it …,” Byers wrote to Halper.
“I’m not into buying [Hillary Clinton spokesman] Nick Merrill-type quotes shitting on your book but I do think when someone you list as a source comes forward and says this, its relevant,” Byers wrote. “Would you like to comment?”
When asked by Halper if McCurry had actually read the book, Byers responded: “I’m not certain. I know he’s read the parts where his name is mentioned.”
Halper then asked Byers what specific charges by McCurry he should be responding to.
Byers explained:
A) That he hardly remembers talking to you, suggesting that reports that he cooperated with you for the book (see Lloyd Grove) are overstated
B) That you did not write the book he advised you to write, but instead wrote an attack on Clinton
C) That it’s not a book that deserves to be re-reported by other news orgs
D)
Halper addressed the charge by hinting that McCurry may now be facing backlash within the Clinton organization for opening up in the book.
“Mike is proving one of the main points of my book: If you cross Clinton, Inc., and if you’re seen as betraying the company, then you pay a price,” Halper wrote. “I’m sorry if Mike’s paying a price for talking to me. I wish him well.”
“Got it,” Byers responded.
However, Byers has yet to run a piece on McCurry’s role in Clinton, Inc.
Asked on Monday by Halper if an article had yet to be published, Byers responded: “No … not sure it will.”
McCurry is traveling and could not be reached for comment. Byers did not respond to a request for comment.
Team Clinton has long used its relationships with top reporters to suppress all negative coverage, according to Halper’s book.
“The Clintons have worked hard to build relationships with key media outlets, especially since their defeat in 2008, and have often been hugely successful,” Halper writes in Clinton, Inc.
“George Stephanopoulos, who has been known to hold daily calls with Clinton aides, is stationed at ABC, where Donna Brazile is now a regular. (While Stephanopoulos has been ostracized, and his relationship with the Clintons is complicated, recent appearances by President Clinton on the show indicate a kind of cooling.)
“Virginia Moseley, whose husband (Tom Nides) was a top State Department official under Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is at CNN, where Paul Begala seems to be back,” Halper continues. “At Fox, there’s Doug Schoen and James Carville, who just signed on as a contributor. And of course Chelsea’s still under contract at NBC.”
Halper concludes: “Practically all big network and cable television stations have Clinton cronies waiting in the wings. That doesn’t mean the channels will never air a negative Clinton story—but it does suggest that there will be a higher bar to air hurtful segments about Hillary Clinton than for probably any other potential candidate in the next race.”
Clinton spokesman Merrill has publicly issued a decree for reporters to not mention Halper’s book, as well as others that reflect poorly on the Clintons, particularly Hillary.
Writers should not be “allowed” to pen books that portray the Clintons in a less than favorable light, Merrill told the Washington Examiner last week.
A peculiar early leak of Halper’s book also points to efforts by Clinton loyalists to derail any negative coverage.
An entire PDF of Halper’s 317-page book was leaked to reporters well before the official release, prompting speculation that the “strange leak,” as the Daily Beast put it, was an attempt to muddle publisher HarperCollins’ press strategy.

Chuck Todd Ignores Israeli Ambassador’s Request To Correct False Story

Part of the way through a live interview, Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer asked NBC’s Chuck Todd if the network would correct a false accusation made by Gaza-based reporter and Hamas sympathizer, Ayman Mohyeldin.
Mohyeldin claimed on Twitter and in a report for NBC News that an Israeli drone had attacked a UN facility, killing over a dozen civilians. The claim led to widespread condemnation of Israel. Yet an investigation proved that the cause of the explosion was a rocket from Islamic Jihad that fell short of its target in Israel, landing in Gaza.
After Dermer asked Todd to correct the story, Todd changed the subject and then ended the interview.

Hamas Rockets Exploding in Gaza Strip

JERUSALEM—More than a third of the 140 rockets fired by Hamas at Israel yesterday fell short and exploded inside the Gaza Strip, according to the Israeli Army spokesman’s office.
Rocket shortfalls have increased, according to Israeli military sources. They attribute these misfires to the intense pressure Hamas rocket squads face from Israeli air and artillery attacks, as well as poorly assembled rockets.
Some 2,000 rockets have been fired at Israel since the fighting between Israel and Hamas began three weeks ago. Of these, say army officers, about 300 have fallen inside the Gaza Strip. The army spokesman said shortfalls were responsible for explosions three days ago at a hospital and a refugee camp that took dozens of lives. Hamas has denied the accusation and blamed Israel for the blasts.
“We believe that some 70 percent of their rocket arsenal has been depleted and they are now firing from the bottom of the heap,” a military source told the World Tribune.
Hamas has refused to send a delegation to Cairo to discuss a temporary cease-fire as long as Israeli troops continue to demolish attack tunnels. The organization reportedly withdrew its opposition to Israeli troops remaining inside the strip during cease-fire talks, but said that its fighters will continue to fire as long as the Israelis continue destroying tunnels.
Egypt says it will not host the talks if Hamas is still firing. The displacement of more than 200,000 Gaza residents by the fighting, the virtual absence of electricity, and a degraded water supply has thus far failed to persuade Hamas’ military wing to drop its demand that Israel halt its tunnel demolitions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today at a cabinet meeting that the army has demolished dozens of tunnels leading to the border, about 10 of which extended below the border fence into Israel. “We are determined to complete this mission, with or without a ceasefire,” said Netanyahu.
Hamas fighters in Israeli army uniforms have succeeded in killing close to 10 Israeli soldiers during incursions utilizing the tunnel network. Residents of kibbutzim along the border have demanded that the army eliminate the tunnel threat before withdrawing from Gaza.
The army mobilized an additional 16,000 reservists yesterday, indicating a readiness to drive further into Gaza if a ceasefire is not soon reached. A total of 86,000 reservists have been called up since the fighting began.

Hamas Imam: ‘Totally Exterminate’ the Jews

(Newsmax) – A Hamas imam is calling for the organization to “totally exterminate” the Jews because “wherever the Jews lived, they spread corruption,” a video posted by the Middle East Media Research Institute shows.
The hate-filled speech was broadcast on Hamas’ Al-Aqsa TV on July 25, and was videotaped from Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, Israel National News reports.
In an excerpt from the alarming sermon posted by Jihad Watch, the cleric fumes:
SPECIAL: Join the Tea Party REVOLUTION! The Obama Regime must be dismantled!
“Our doctrine in fighting you [the Jews] is that we will totally exterminate you. We will not leave a single one of you alive, because you are alien usurpers of the land and eternal mercenaries.
“You are the mercenaries of all times. Research the history, my brothers. Wherever the Jews lived, they spread corruption. Oh, Muslims, didn’t you notice that Allah said: ‘They spread in THE land…’ The definite article in ‘THE land’ means the entire land. ‘They spread in the land corruption, and Allah loves not the corrupters.’”
Breitbart reports that the extermination of the Jews is included in Hamas’ charter, where an introduction states, “Our struggle against the Jews is extremely wide-ranging and grave.”
The genocide theme is then picked up in several articles of the charter, Breitbart notes, including the declaration that “Israel, by virtue of its being Jewish and of having a Jewish population, defies Islam and the Muslims,” and elsewhere:
“Hamas has been looking forward to implement Allah’s promise whatever time it might take. The prophet (prayer and peace be upon him) said (in a Hadith):
‘The time (of Resurrection) will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews; until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry: O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him!’”
Jihad Watch decried the lack of attention by “the international media.” to the genocide threat.
People posting messages on the organization’s website agreed.
One commenter on Wednesday said, “Those of us who are the sons and daughters of survivors know that when a group of people led by a death-cult ideology say that they will kill all the Jews, they mean it.”
“The fact that this rhetoric is not reported in the mainstream press is frightening to me personally,” the poster wrote. “Each time, it should make the headlines. I am amazed how many Jews don’t get it.”
Another commenter on the website is not alarmed just by the Hamas cleric’s vow to “totally exterminate” the Jews, but also that “this is in Hamas’ charter!”
“How dare [President Barack] Obama attempt to put Israel in harm’s way by suggesting a ‘ceasefire’ from Israel! Hamas is the one to be condemned, not Israel. Jeez, the world has gone mad under Obama.”

Transcript of Israeli PM talking to US President.  Shocking attitude BO has for our friend Israel.

The full transcript is below, translated from Hebrew, courtesy of The Times of Israel:

Barack Obama: I demand that Israel agrees to an immediate, unilateral ceasefire and halt all offensive activities, in particular airstrikes.
Benjamin Netanyahu: And what will Israel receive in exchange for a ceasefire?
BO: I believe that Hamas will cease its rocket fire — silence will be met with silence.
BN: Hamas broke all five previous ceasefires. It’s a terrorist organization dedicated to the destruction of Israel.
BO: I repeat and expect Israel to stop all its military activities unilaterally. The pictures of destruction in Gaza distance the world from Israel’s position.
BN: Kerry’s proposal was completely unrealistic and gives Hamas military and diplomatic advantages.
BO: Within a week of the end of Israel’s military activities, Qatar and Turkey will begin negotiations with Hamas based on the 2012 understandings, including Israel’s commitment to removing the siege restrictions on Gaza.
BN: Qatar and Turkey are the biggest supporters of Hamas. It’s impossible to rely on them to be fair mediators.
BO: I trust Qatar and Turkey. Israel is not in the position that it can choose its mediators.
BN: I protest because Hamas can continue to launch rockets and use tunnels for terror attacks –
BO: (interrupting Netanyahu) The ball’s in Israel’s court, and it must end all its military activities.

Hamas Harassing Journalists in Gaza

Hamas has been harassing and threatening Western journalists to prevent them from reporting on the terror group’s operations, the Times of Israel reports.
The Times of Israel discovered numerous instances of Hamas members harassing reporters. In some cases, Hamas stole equipment from photographers who took pictures of Hamas militants launching rockets from civilian structures or fighting in street clothes.
“We have no doubt that Hamas, through coercion and violence, limits the freedom of foreign journalists in Gaza,” an Israeli official told the Times of Israel. “Walking around Gaza with a camera and asking people what they think is not like walking around New York or London. People are not free to say their true opinions. It’s a bit like asking Syrians in government-controlled areas of Damascus if they like President [Bashar] Assad.”
Hamas has indisputably used violence against reporters who have covered stories it doesn’t like, the official said. And it has emphatically limited reporters’ access to aspects of Hamas operations that would reflect to its detriment. One example of this relates to Gaza’s Shifa hospital, the official added. “We know that downstairs there is a Hamas command and control center and that Hamas leaders are hiding there. No reporter is allowed to go anywhere downstairs. They’re only allowed to work upstairs to take pictures of casualties, the pictures that Hamas wants them to take.”

Regev: Ceasefires Apply to Hamas As Well

Israeli spokesman Mark Regev explained to CNN that the reason fighting had resumed in Gaza Wednesday was Hamas had openly rejected a humanitarian ceasefire request and resumed firing at Israel.
“The truth is we announced earlier today a humanitarian ceasefire,” Regev said. “We did that in coordination with the United Nations at their request. The trouble is Hamas rejected it and then continued to shoot. A ceasefire means not just [an] Israel ceasefire. A ceasefire means that Hamas must cease fire too, and if rockets continue to be shot at our cities and so forth, of course, that means the ceasefire has become null and void and so we have restarted operations.”
@ This Hour host John Berman asked Regev whether Israel needed to do more to protect children and civilians in Gaza after an attack on a U.N. school killed 19.
“We are making a maximum effort to try to be as targeted as possible in a difficult combat environment,” Regev said. “But the question that has to be asked is why has a U.N. facility been turned into a combat zone, and the answer is clear. Hamas has had a deliberate policy of abusing U.N. facilities, not because Mark Regev says so … You have a consistent pattern of behavior by Hamas to abuse U.N. neutrality, to abuse U.N. humanitarian work, and we’ve seen three documented cases where Hamas has stored rockets at U.N. facilities, rockets that are ultimately shot at Israel.”
The Washington Free Beacon has reported on Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. and its allies, and its policy of ordering Gaza civilians to remain in their houses if they’re about to be bombed by Israelis, turning them into human shields. Also, nearly 100 U.S. lawmakers will petition the U.N. this week to formally designate the Hamas rocket arsenal as “an impenetrable barrier to regional peace” and to make their removal from the Gaza Strip a “top priority,” according to a copy of the unsent letter obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

AP Mocks Congressional Support for Israel

In a shocking instance of journalistic malpractice, the Associated Press, which describes itself as committed “to the highest standards of objective, accurate journalism,” criticized congressional support for Israel in its ongoing conflict with Hamas, tweeting “As much of world watches Gaza war in horror, members of Congress fall over each other to support Israel.”
In response, as the Washington Times reports, the AP “received a wave of backlash on Twitter,” forcing it to send out a revised tweet: “Many U.S. lawmakers strongly back Israel in Gaza war (revises wording in this @AP tweet).” As the Washington Times report points out, the original Associated Press tweet has not been deleted from the AP’s twitter feed.

Hillary: Hamas Uses Human Shields Because ‘Gaza is Pretty Small’

In an interview with Fusion TV, Hillary Clinton argues Hamas hides their military weapons among civilians due mainly to geography, not radical religious beliefs or their hatred of Israel.
Clinton’s explanation came during an interview with Jorge Ramos. The former Secretary of State prefaced her theory by telling Ramos, “I’m not a military planner.” “Hamas puts its missiles, its rockets in civilian areas,” she then said before blaming the poor storage spot on the combination of the “small” size of Gaza and their large population.
Breitbart’s Joel Pollak writes:
As Secretary of State, Clinton was part of the relentless pressure on Israel that emboldened Hamas, once berating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over some apartments in Jerusalem. And as First Lady, Clinton was one of the first to endorse a Palestinian state, and infamously lent credence to absurd charges that Israel was using chemical weapons.
Clinton is not doing anything to distance herself in a meaningful way from Obama’s disastrous Middle East policies–nor can she, since she helped carried them out and shares much of his ideological orientation.
So the idea that a President Clinton might have been friendlier to Israel, or might be in the future, lacks any real evidence–other than her long track record of interest-group pandering, which saw her lean opportunistically to the pro-Israel side when she represented New York in the U.S. Senate.

CNN anchor silences Palestinian spokesman amid attempt to claim Hamas wants peace

Dumbfounded.
Here is a fun video via CNN in which a former Palestinian foreign minister fails dismally in his attempt to frame Hamas, the governing authority in Gaza, as a party interested in peace with Israel. In this interview with CNN anchors John Berman and Michaela Pereira, Nabil Shaath is shown to be a lucid and […]

Day 210 of the year and time to state the obvious.

The Jews have lived in the area which is now Israel for more than 2000 years,
so they are not recent invaders and have a legitimate right to be there
Jerusalem is mentioned in the bible 667 times but not once in the koran.
So Jerusalem should be in Israel and not a Palestinian nation.

1948 Israel secures borders and expels some arabs after repeated attacks from arab states.
850,000 Jews expelled from Arab states and 700,000 Palestinians expelled from Israel.
So it was a tit for tat thing and not one sided against the Palestinians

1967 Israel attempts to move towards west bank state for Palestinians , but rejected by Palestinians.

Israeli Arabs in Jerusalem back Israeli control because of the freedoms they have.
free speech, free worship of any religion. Free press. Minority rights.

No Arab states offer free speech, freedom to worship a religion other than Islam,
freedoms for women and minorities.

The United Nations has condemned Israel more times than all the other nations of the world combined.
Nobody can tell me that the Arab Countries are any near as open, kind, free, than Israel.
Not to mention Russia, China, North Korea.... etc. What about Sudan Darfur ?  they are monumentally more egregious than Israel.

Where Ukraine’s Separatists Get Their Weapons

By Thomas Grove and Warren Strobel
DONETSK Ukraine (Reuters) – On the last day of May, a surface-to-air rocket was signed out of a military base near Moscow where it had been stored for more than 20 years.
According to the ornate Cyrillic handwriting in the weapon’s Russian Defence Ministry logbook, seen by Reuters, the portable rocket, for use with an Igla rocket launcher, was destined for a base in Rostov, some 50 km (31 miles) from the Ukrainian border. In that area, say U.S. officials, lies a camp for training Ukrainian separatist fighters.
Three weeks later the rocket and its logbook turned up in eastern Ukraine, where government troops seized them from pro-Russian separatists.
The logbook, which is more than 20 pages long, records that rocket 03181 entered service on May 21, 1993, and had regular tests as recently as 2005 to make sure it was in fighting form. The seal of the Russian Defence Ministry has been stamped over the signature sending the weapon to Rostov.
A copy of the log was passed to a diplomat in Ukraine’s capital, Kiev. Reuters was unable to verify its authenticity with the Russian military, and Moscow has consistently denied arming the separatists in eastern Ukraine.
The Igla and its logbook are just one indication that weapons are flowing from Russia into Ukraine. Interviews with American officials, diplomats in Kiev, and Russian military analysts paint a picture of a steady and ongoing flow. These people say weapons – from small arms to armored personnel carriers, tanks and sophisticated missile systems – have flooded into the region since May, fueling the violence.
In an interview with Reuters last week, a separatist leader said that Russia may have supplied the separatists with BUK rockets, which were used to shoot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. The destruction of the civilian passenger plane over eastern Ukraine on July 17 killed nearly 300 people.
Alexander Khodakovsky, commander of the Vostok Battalion, told Reuters: “I knew that a BUK came from Luhansk (in east Ukraine) … I heard about it. I think they sent it back. Because I found out about it at exactly the moment that I found out that this tragedy (of MH17) had taken place. They probably sent it back in order to remove proof of its presence.”
Three U.S. government officials said the weapons flow from Russia increased dramatically several weeks ago in response to successes by Ukrainian government forces, including the recapture of Slaviansk, a separatist stronghold in eastern Ukraine. The new shipments included anti-aircraft systems designed to combat Ukraine’s air power, those officials said.
“If you trace the increase in supplies and materials … we’ve seen in the last few weeks culminating in this tragic incident, it’s clearly in the face of successes by the Ukrainian forces,” said a senior U.S. official, who like the others spoke on condition of anonymity.
Moscow, which has said it is willing to cooperate with an international investigation into the loss of MH17, has denied sending any BUK missiles to the rebels. It has said Washington is attempting to destabilize Russia through events in Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said this week that Moscow was hopeful that monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe could be deployed along Russia’s border with Ukraine to dispel suspicions that Russia is aiding the rebels.
“We hope that this will dispel suspicions that are regularly being voiced against us, that those (border) checkpoints controlled by the militias from the Ukrainian side are used for massive troops and weaponry deployment from Russia to Ukraine,” he said.
Pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine maintain most of their weapons have come from captured Ukrainian armories or have been seized directly from the Ukrainian military on the battlefield.

BORDER SKIRMISHES
In the weeks following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March, tensions grew on the south and east frontiers of Ukraine. Kiev’s border guard agency said it stopped thousands of Russian citizens who tried to enter Ukrainian territory carrying weapons or bags full of camouflage.
Separatists started firing on border guard positions, according to Ukrainian officials. On May 29, the Stanychno-Luhanske border guard division in Ukraine’s Luhansk province was attacked by 300 gunmen with small arms and grenade launchers. Rebels seized control of the facility after five days of fighting. Other border guard divisions and checkpoints along Ukraine’s more than 2,000-km border with Russia also fell.
Separatists were able to ferry in people and equipment almost unhindered.
That led to more ambitious attacks on Ukrainian targets. On June 14, for instance, separatists shot down a Ukrainian IL-76 military transport jet coming in to land near the eastern city of Luhansk. All 49 people on board died; charred pieces of the fuselage and engines littered the rolling wheat fields outside the village of Novohannivka.
The weapon used that day, according to separatists who later spoke about the attack, was an Igla rocket launcher, sometimes known generically as a MANPAD, for man-portable air-defence system.
The origin of the weapon remains unclear: There is no evidence this was connected to the Igla rocket seized by Ukrainian forces a week later along with its log book. Iglas were used extensively in Afghanistan, Chechnya and Bosnia in the 1990s and are easy to transport and common in eastern Ukraine. Videos, posted online after Ukrainian troops drove separatists out of Slaviansk on July 7, show boxes marked 9M39 – the model of missile used with an Igla – stacked in the basement of the mayor’s office.
The day after the IL-76 was shot down, Valery Bolotov, top commander of the Luhansk People’s Republic, claimed responsibility. “I can’t tell you anything more detailed on the IL-76, but I will repeat that the IL-76 was hit by our militia, the air defense forces of the Luhansk People’s Republic,” Bolotov, who wore a camouflage T-shirt, said in a video posted on YouTube.
The commander said that separatists in Luhansk controlled nearly 80 km of the border from Dolzhanksy to Izvaryna at that time, but denied getting weapons from Moscow, saying they had been pillaged from Ukrainian army and police store rooms.
A separatist officer in Slaviansk who used the nom de guerre Anton also said the Igla in the IL-76 attack was not Russian but a weapon seized from Ukrainians. He declined to say whether the separatists received other weapons from Russia.
Alexander Gureyev, a Russia supporter from Luhansk, told Reuters last week that all the separatists’ weapons had been found in local arms warehouses.
“We had to boost our arsenal,” he said. “If you have small-caliber weapons and they’re shooting at you with Howitzers – that’s not right. But now they’re getting it from us with Howitzers, mortars, tanks. It’s given them something to think about.”
He declined to detail the origin of heavy weapons, but said separatists were “thrilled” when the IL-76 was shot down. “It was like a holiday in the city. People thought things would change and that with such a success people would stop dying in this conflict.”
He said the Luhansk rebels had decided to station anti-aircraft sharpshooters at the nearby airfield in retribution for the deaths of at least eight people in what he called a Ukrainian airstrike on the rebels’ headquarters in Luhansk.
“They simply flew above us, we were already fed up with it all and decided that we would start shooting at everything,” he said. “We simply took anything out of the sky that flew above us.”
“RUSSIAN BONEYARDS”
Not everyone believes the separatists’ assertions that their weapons had been seized from Ukrainian troops.
A diplomat said that arms had started to come in from Russia regularly around the time of the independence vote in Crimea in May. In the past couple of weeks an increasing amount of materiel had arrived “in reaction to the collapse of Slaviansk,” he said. That included T64 tanks from stocks of old weapons discarded after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Anton Lavrov, an independent Russian military analyst said: “It would be stupid to deny that Russia supports the separatists. The main question is only the scale of this support.”
He said pro-Russian separatists have been found in possession of a Kamaz Mustang military transport vehicle that is not used in Ukraine and cannot be bought there. Reuters could not independently verify that.
“There was a serious escalation in the middle of June, when heavy weapons began to appear among the separatists, including tanks and artillery in such quantities that it would be hard to attribute it to seizures from Ukrainian stockpiles.”
Another independent Russian military analyst, Alexander Golts, also said the rebels had received arms from Russia. He described it as “all old Soviet weaponry.” He said rocket launchers were spotted in April or the beginning of May very early in the conflict.
Washington is in no doubt Russia is the source of many of the weapons. At least 20 tanks and armored personnel carriers have crossed the border from Russia since the downing of Malaysia Airlines MH17, a senior U.S. intelligence official said.
In a media briefing on July 22, U.S. intelligence officials also released satellite photographs of what they said was a training site for Ukrainian separatists near the Russian city of Rostov. The photographs appear to show increased activity at the site between June 19 and July 21.
A Moscovite volunteer called Valery Kolotsei, 37, said he joined the rebels in Ukraine’s Luhansk region for a few weeks in May and June. He said he had connected with other volunteers over Vkontakte, Russia’s version of Facebook. They had gathered, he said, in the Rostov region, where U.S. officials say a camp for training Ukrainian separatist fighters sits.
Kolotsei said the rebel group he joined used a motley array of weapons, including a mortar produced in 1944.

“OUT OF CONTROL”
Before the MH17 incident, U.S. spy agencies issued multiple warnings that Russia was shipping heavy weaponry, including rockets, to Ukrainian separatists, U.S. security officials said.
The officials said that before MH-17 went down, the United States had become aware separatists possessed SA-11 BUK missiles, but believed they were all inoperable. Officials acknowledged, too, that U.S. intelligence agencies do not know who fired the missile or when and how separatists may have obtained it.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has firmly denied his country had any involvement in the fate of MH17. Putin and the separatists blamed Ukraine for the disaster, with some suggesting a Ukrainian missile team brought down the passenger aircraft.
Ukraine rejects such claims. Vladyslav Seleznyov, a spokesman for Ukraine’s military operations in eastern Ukraine, said: “The Ukrainian army has portable missile systems of the Igla and Osa type and the complex BUK. However, they are not used in this campaign because there is no need for them.” The rebels have no aircraft, he said.
Despite the MH17 tragedy, the conflict shows little sign of diminishing. Another U.S. official said: “There are indications that some groups feel betrayed by Moscow not doing enough. Others don’t like the way this is headed.” He said some rebels fear the fighting has “gotten out of control.”
Olexander Motsyk, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, told Reuters in an interview that his country has evidence Russia is preparing to supply separatist rebels with a powerful new multiple-rocket system known as the Tornado. According to military websites, the system first saw service earlier this decade and is an improvement on Russia’s older Grad missile launcher.
The evidence for this, Motsyk said, includes satellite photographs as well as intercepts of telephone conversations. He declined to be more specific.
Referring to the flow of weapons from Russia into eastern Ukraine, he said: “Nothing has changed after the downing of the civilian airliner.”

America on the wrong side

Allen West: ‘Allow Israel To Crush Hamas’

Former congressman Lt. Col. Allen West says the United States “should allow Israel to crush Hamas.”
Appearing on WMAL radio in Washington, D.C., West told co-host Brian Wilson and Larry O’Connor, “We should sit down with … all those who understand that this move of radical Islamism in the Middle East has to be crushed.”
Leveling harsh criticism on President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, West questioned whether the world knows whose side we are on in the Middle East.
“He has been an absolute catastrophe,” West said with regard to Kerry. “President Obama, I don’t understand who he sides with. We have fled Libya because the ‘militia and rebels’ who we supported have now caused us to get out of Libya because they are Islamists,” West continued. “He supported the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and now that General el-Sisi has gotten rid of the Muslim Brotherhood, he does not want to support Egypt.”
“We are on the wrong side in the Middle East,” he concluded. “Israel sees it.”
West’s criticism of the Obama administration didn’t stop at their policies toward Israel. He turned his focus on our crumbling influence in Europe and Russia’s continued aggression in that region.
“A person like Hillary Clinton should not be in the White House because she does not want to take leadership role,” West said when speaking about the former secretary of state’s presidential ambitions. “Maybe she wants to give Vladimir Putin another little toy box with a red button on top of it and say ‘hey, let’s play reset again.”
“We need to have someone like a Ronald Reagan to stand up at a Brandenburg Gate and say ‘Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall’ because right now Vladimir Putin is attempting to rebuild it.”

Oil here

One of the World’s Biggest Sources of Oil Is Right Here in America

SANTA FE, N.M.—Oil production in New Mexico keeps on booming, and it could continue to do so for some time.
“I think the forecast is great,” said Parker Hallam, president and CEO of Crude Energy in Dallas. “I’m excited.”
The Permian Basin, located in eastern New Mexico and West Texas, recently has become one of the world’s biggest sources for crude oil.
The Bakken formation in North Dakota, the Eagle Ford “play” in South Texas and the Permian Basin are each producing more than 1 million barrels of oil per day, with the Permian leading the pack at 1.6 million barrels a day.

Domestic production has grown so large that last month, the International Energy Agency announced the United States surpassed Russia and even Saudi Arabia in oil production.
In New Mexico, field production has doubled in the past three years and is on the verge of surpassing 10 million barrels a month, according to figures from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
“I think the next 10 years, we can expect to see three to 3-and-a-half million [barrels a day from the Permian Basin],” Hallam said. “We could see even more than that.”
The reason?
Horizontal drilling, using hydraulic fracturing—“fracking.”

Congress to U.N.: Hamas’ Arsenal Must Be Removed

Nearly 100 House lawmakers will petition the United Nations this week to formally designate Hamas’ rocket arsenal as “an impenetrable barrier to regional peace” and to make their removal from the Gaza Strip a “top priority,” according to a copy of the unsent letter obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.
A bipartisan coalition of House lawmakers have already signed on to the letter, which will be sent later this week to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
The letter comes as Hamas ignores all recent ceasefire agreements and continues to fire rockets at Israeli civilians, who have been seeking shelter from these attacks for weeks since Hamas launched its latest war on Israel.
As the Israeli military continues its campaign to dismantle Hamas’ network of underground tunnels and clear the strip of missiles, House lawmakers led by Reps. Doug Lamborn (R., Colo.) and Brad Schneider (D., Ill.) are pushing the U.N. to take a more active stance against Hamas.
“We, the elected representatives of the American people, call on the United Nations to formally recognize Gaza’s rockets as an impenetrable barrier to regional peace, and to make their immediate removal a top priority,” write the lawmakers, who are joined on the letter by 10 leading pro-Israel organizations.
“We urge the United Nations to take the steps necessary to make the removal of Hamas’ rockets a top priority,” states the letter, which is signed by lawmakers who, in a somewhat surprising show of bipartisan support, are both extremely liberal and extremely conservative.
“Doing so will bring much needed stability to a region that has been plagued by terror and suffering for too long and is imperative to any effort to bring a lasting peace to the people of Israel and Gaza,” they write.
The U.N. has done little to censure Hamas for engaging in a litany of war crimes in recent weeks, including using civilians as human shields and intentionally targeting civilians with rockets.
However, the United Nations, led by Arab member states, has sought to condemn Israel’s defensive maneuvers and force Israel to make concessions to Hamas, a U.S.-designated terror organization.
U.S. efforts to broker a ceasefire have also favored Hamas’ demands on Israel, which has forced the Jewish state to flatly reject these proposals, according to reports.
Lawmakers petition the U.N. to take Hamas’ rocket supply—some of which is supplied by Iran and its affiliates—as a serious threat to international safety.
“More than 9,000 rockets have been fired out of Gaza since 2001,” the letter states. “Once considered to be short-range threats with minimal payloads, Hamas has continuously improved the range and lethality of these rockets to ensure a maximum threat to Israel.”
“Hamas can now reach virtually every major population center in Israel, with deadly effect,” they write. “Today, every rocket fired puts the long-sought peace between Israel and the Palestinians further out of reach.”
While U.S. lawmakers are coming together to express their support for Israel and disdain for Hamas, many leaders across the world have focused solely on Israel’s military campaign, chastising the Jewish state for its efforts to destroy Hamas’ terror network.
“In its rush to secure a ceasefire, the international community is ignoring the most important factor,” said Aaron Menenberg, a fellow at the Israel Allies Foundation (IAF), one of the many Jewish groups supporting the House letter to the U.N.
Like the lawmakers who signed on, a diverse mix of interest groups back the letter, including: The Jewish Federation of North America (JFNA), the Jewish Republican Coalition, the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), the Zionist Organization of America, and even the liberal fringe group J Street, among others.
“For Hamas this war is about fundraising and credibility-boosting,” said IAF’s Menenberg. “For Israel, it’s about restoring calm and preserving life. Both are fighting for survival, but only one is worth preserving. If the world wants to end the fighting, it needs to end Hamas, and that starts with getting rid of its rockets.”
Hamas’ use of sophisticated Iranian-made rockets that can reach deep into Israel has been a game changer this time around, Menenberg said.
“It was always unacceptable to fire rockets on civilian populations. But now, Hamas has the capacity to reach nearly all of Israel’s population,” he said. “It takes the threat to a whole new level. Without removing the rockets, this will only continue and become deadlier in the months and years ahead.”

Netanyahu: Get ready for a long campaign in Gaza

A Fatah-brokered truce?
Yesterday it appeared that the fighting in Gaza had begun to dwindle down, as Israel focused on the tunnels and Hamas’ rockets slowed down. Late in the day, though, Hamas began shooting medium- and long-range missiles that went as far as Haifa and sent another infiltration squad through the tunnels into southern Israel, and the […]

More Americans Blame Hamas for Current Conflict

More than twice as many Americans blame Hamas for the current conflict than blame Israel, however, this division is far less clear among Democratic voters, according to a new Pew Research poll.
Forty percent of Americans blame Hamas for the violence in the region, compared to just 19 percent that blame Israel.
Among Democrats that were polled, the margin shrinks drastically with 29 percent putting the blame on Hamas and 26 putting it on Israel, with 18 percent saying that the two parties share responsibility.
Republicans on the other hand blame Hamas by a wide margin of 60-13 percent.
Only 25 percent of respondents believe that Israel has gone too far in its response, and 35 percent think that their response has been just right. An additional 13 percent believe that Israel has not gone far enough.
Forty-four percent of liberal democrats say that Israel has gone too far in responding to the conflict.

Kerry says U.S. continuing to work on ‘humanitarian cease-fire’ between Israel, Hamas

Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that he is continuing to work on a cease-fire agreement that allows aid to be brought to both Israel and people in Gaza.
“Today, we are continuing to work toward establishing an unconditional, humanitarian cease-fire, one that could honor Eid, which begins now, and that will stop the fighting, allow desperately needed food and medicine and other supplies into Gaza, and enable Israel to address the threat which we fully understand and which is real, the threat posed by tunnel attacks.”
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that work is ongoing to negotiate a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. (AP Photo/Pool)
Kerry said his goal is to allow these steps to be taken “without having to resort to combat.”
Eid al-Fitr is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, which begins on Tuesday.
Kerry spoke after his recent talks in the Middle East and Paris. He said a goal of the talks as well is to disarm members of Hamas who have been firing rockets into Israel from Gaza.
“We also believe that any process to resolve the crisis in Gaza in a lasting and meaningful way must lead to the disarmament of Hamas and all terrorist groups,” he said. “We will work closely with Israel, and regional partners, and the international community in pursuit of this goal.”

NBC, CBS, Reuters, Lie About Israeli Attacks; Face No Repercussions

Reporters covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for NBC, CBS, Reuters, and other outlets brazenly reported false information on Monday claiming Israeli was responsible for attacks on Palestinian civilians that were actually committed by Hamas.
The reporters have faced no repercussions yet for the promulgation of erroneous and biased information. It is yet another example of how reporters for major outlets in the Middle East interject their anti-Israel bias into their supposedly neutral reporting on the conflict.
After explosions were spotted at two civilian outposts in Gaza, the reporters immediately tweeted that Israel was to blame, though there was little evidence to corroborate this.
In fact, the attacks at the Shati refugee camp and Shifa hospital in Gaza were perpetrated by Hamas, according to Israeli military officials, who said that the IDF was conducting no operations at the time of the explosions.
These reporters wasted little time in disseminating false information against Israel over Twitter, according to screen grabs posted on the pro-Israel Elder of Ziyon blog:

Thousands March in French City of Marseille in Support of Israel

MARSEILLE France (Reuters) – Thousands took to the streets of Marseille in the south of France on Sunday to show their support for Israel, the first such demonstration in the country since the start of the recent fighting in Gaza, organizers said.
Some 2,000 pro-Israeli demonstrators, carrying French and Israeli flags, were separated by riot police from a few dozen pro-Palestinian protesters chanting anti-Israeli slogans in Marseille’s Old Port in the center of the Mediterranean city.
“We are here to show our solidarity with Israel, which has been attacked and has a right to defend itself,” William Labi, head of the body governing Jewish congregations in Marseille, told Reuters. The protest was also organized by the community’s umbrella group CRIF.
Pro-Palestinian protesters clashed with police in central Paris on Saturday when thousands of protesters defied a ban by French authorities to rally against Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip. Police made about 70 arrests.
In Marseille, some 2,000 people had marched peacefully on Saturday in an authorized pro-Palestinian demonstration.
France has both the largest Jewish and Muslim populations in Europe and flare-ups in the Middle East have in the past added to tensions between the two communities.
Israel began its offensive earlier this month, citing a surge in rocket attacks launched from Hamas militants in the Gaza strip.
Some 1,031 Palestinians, mainly civilians and including many children, have been killed in the 20-day conflict. Israel says 43 of its soldiers have died, along with three civilians killed by rocket and mortar fire out of the Mediterranean enclave.

Wolf: ‘Christianity As We Now Know it in Iraq is Being Wiped Out’

Rep. Frank Wolf (R., Va.) discussed the purge of Christianity being conducted by ISIL Thursday on the House floor, saying “Christianity as we now know it in Iraq is being wiped out.”
“I believe what is happening to the Christian community in Iraq is genocide!” Wolf exclaimed. “I also believe it is a crime against humanity. Where is the West?  Where is the Obama Administration?  Where is this Congress? The silence is deafening.”
Wolf said protecting this ancient community needed to be President Obama’s priority.

Gunmaker Relocates U.S. Headquarters in Response to State’s New Firearms Restrictions

Italian gunmaker Beretta announced this week the company is relocating its U.S. headquarters from Maryland to Tennessee in response to gun restrictions passed last year.
The company has been producing firearms in Maryland since 1977 but the Firearm Safety Act of 2013, which bans a range of firearms and places restrictions on gun owners, solidified Beretta’s move out of state.
“We tend to be a company that has deep roots,” board member Jeff Reh told the Baltimore Sun. “We didn’t want to leave Maryland or even consider it but we decided it was the most prudent course of action. We could have been happy staying in Maryland for hundreds of years.”
>> Cuomo’s Anti-Gun Law Blamed for Job Losses at N.Y. Firearms Factory
General Manager Jeff Cooper cited an earlier version of the statute introduced by the state Senate that would have prevented the company from producing or storing firearms in Maryland as a key reason for the move.
“While we were able in the Maryland House of Delegates to reverse some of those obstructive provisions, the possibility that such restrictions might be reinstated in the future leaves us very worried about the wisdom of maintaining a firearm manufacturing factory in the state,” Cooper told the Washington Times.
Beretta’s move will strip 300 jobs out of Maryland, according to Forbes.
>> New York Gun Manufacturer Opts to Open New Facility in Alabama
The company began building a factory in Tennessee after the bill was passed, though this facility was solely going to be used for new equipment and the manufacture of new product lines. The threat of the further restrictions ultimately pushed the company out of Maryland.
“The chance we would go through that next legislative session or the one after that was just too great a risk for us to accept,” Reh said.
Beretta’s Tennessee branch is scheduled to open mid-2015.

Excellent narative of the Israeli fight

Israel Can Win

Slandered, despised, insulted, degraded, Israel is nonetheless winning its war against Hamas. The number of rocket attacks launched by the terror group each day has been halved. The IDF is uprooting the underground tunnels Hamas uses to smuggle weapons, contraband, and terrorists in and out of the Gaza Strip. On Wednesday evening, Israel’s Channel Two newscast carried footage of Hamas terrorists surrendering to the IDF. The jihadists carried white flags. They stripped to their shorts, proving they were not wearing suicide belts. These are facts Hamas does not want you to know, images Hamas does not want you to see.
And you probably won’t see them. Since the evening of July 17, when Israel launched its ground offensive, Western media has been filled with Hamas propaganda. In the United States, the debate over the conflict is invariably couched in terms favorable to Hamas: Are civilian casualties too high? Is it safe to fly into Ben-Gurion airport? Has the IDF targeted schools and hospitals? One MSNBC anchor calls Israel, which abandoned Gaza in 2005, the “occupying authority.” Another praises a “gutsy” Israeli, who refuses to serve in his nation’s military.
On CNN, the Islamist Turkish prime minister says Israel has “surpassed what Hitler did.” A CNN reporter calls Israelis “scum”; a NBC reporter tweets a scurrilous article calling U.S. Jews who join the IDF “America’s Israeli jihadists”; and a writer for Gawker says it’s time to send the Jews back to Germany. Reporters once embedded with military forces. Now the talking points of a military force—the talking points of Hamas—are embedded in the U.S. media.
And yet the immediate danger to the success of this necessary war does not come from the electronic intifada. It does not come from resurgent anti-Semitism, or the United Nations Human Rights Council, or the failure of so many Western elites to recognize the causes of this war, their inability to distinguish between a democratic country struggling to protect its people and a terror state using children as hostages. Hate, law-fare, decadence—they are all challenges for Israel. But Israel can endure them for now. Israel is used to it.
What Israel should not endure is the premature conclusion of hostilities. Disarming Hamas—seizing its rocket caches, collapsing its tunnels, killing and capturing its forces—is vital to Israeli security. And an artificial ceasefire imposed by outside powers, a ceasefire written in terms favorable to Hamas, would undermine the security gains Israel has made to date. President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry have given no sign that they recognize this fact. Or maybe they understand it all too well: The Obama administration’s top priority is imposing a ceasefire at exactly the moment when Israel’s military success is becoming clear.
Secretary Kerry arrived in Cairo earlier this week. No one wanted him there. Egypt’s ruler, General Sisi, has no interest in saving Hamas through international diplomacy: The Muslim Brotherhood is his mortal enemy. Kerry then went from Cairo to Jerusalem, where he met with U.N. Secretary Ban Ki-moon, who flew to the meeting on a plane chartered by Qatar, Hamas’ primary source of cash. Kerry also met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is too gracious to tell the secretary to go back to Boston. (Israel’s former ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, has said publicly what the Israeli government will not: Kerry is an unwelcome guest.) Next up was Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, who honored Kerry’s presence by endorsing Hamas’s call for a “Day of Rage” in the West Bank. Kerry “will soon decide if Hamas and Israel are willing to agree on a Gaza ceasefire,” Reuters says.
Kerry will decide? Who died and made him king?
There is no ceasefire in Gaza because a ceasefire is in no one’s interest. Israel’s objective is clear: degrade Hamas’ capability to fire rockets at Israeli civilians and attack Israeli communities from underground. As for Hamas, its interest is irrational, macabre, and deranged, but no less obvious: Promote itself as the leader of the worldwide struggle against Zionism and Judaism, while ensuring collateral damage that will foment outrage at Israel. That is why Hamas stores weapons in schools, why its military headquarters is in the basement of a hospital. Hamas is not interested in minimizing pain. Hamas wants to maximize it.
Who wants a ceasefire? Obama and Kerry. They need the diplomatic victory after the failure of their misguided and poorly executed bid to reconcile the irreconcilable. The president’s approval rating on foreign policy is abysmal. A ceasefire might help the American people forget, just for a moment, that their president has failed to influence events in Ukraine, Syria, and Iraq, let alone advance American interests overseas. Since he became president, Israel is the one country in the world in whose affairs President Obama has seemed at all interested in intervening. It is the one country whose politics and actions Obama has had no trouble judging harshly. Next to golf, it’s his favorite pastime.
Who wants a ceasefire? Qatar. The sheikhs who bankroll the Muslim Brotherhood, Al Jazeera, and Hamas would see their status rise. A ceasefire would lend credence to the theory that the traditional Sunni powers—Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia—have been eclipsed both by Shiite Iran and by Brotherhood-friendly Sunnis in the Gulf and Turkey. Having lost Egypt and possibly Gaza, the Brotherhood finds itself on the precipice. A Qatari-backed ceasefire that does not include disarmament of Hamas would pull the movement back from the abyss.
“One of the results, one would hope, of a cease-fire would be some form of demilitarization, so that again, this doesn’t continue, doesn’t repeat itself,” said Tony Blinken, Obama’s deputy national security adviser, to NPR. One would hope so. Indeed, actual demilitarization—not hoped for, not partial—is exactly what the IDF is doing now, block by block, tunnel by tunnel. Why is the administration trying to stop it? Is a ceasefire that leaves Hamas with its arsenal really more desirable to them than another week of war?
This is not the time for President Obama and John Kerry to play to type, to promote bad agreements for self-satisfaction, for political gain. If they won’t stand behind Israel, they should at least get out of the way. And let the IDF finish the job.

2012 Video shows major Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber confirm subsidies were meant only for state exchanges.

Oopsie?
Jonathan Gruber, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist who helped design the Massachusetts health law that was the model for Obamacare, was a key influence on the creation of the law. He was widely quoted in the media. During the crafting of the law, the Obama administration brought him on for his expertise. He was paid almost $400,000 to consult with the administration on the law. And he has claimed to have written part of the legislation, the section dealing with small business tax credits.
After the law passed, in 2011 and throughout 2012, multiple states sought his expertise to help them understand their options regarding the choice to set up their own exchanges. During that period of time, in January of 2012, Gruber told an audience at Noblis, a technical management support organization, that tax credits—the subsidies available for health insurance—were only available in states that set up their own exchanges.

Via @kerpen, here’s the relevant video:

This is important, of course, because the US Court of Appeals earlier this week agreed with Mr. Gruber’s 2012 analysis, thus putting the law into what can best be described as a supremely awkward position. As Reason noted later in the article, Gruber in 2013 was telling hardcore progressives pretty much what they wanted to hear: to wit, that the argument that Obamacare was not permitted to offer subsidies to policies on the federal exchange was ‘nutty.’  Alas, the man is yet another person in public and/or policy life who has not yet internalized the fairly simple fact that pretty much everything is being recorded now.  Including the things that one might not want to actually have recorded.
Moe Lane (crosspost)
PS: Possibly the most damning thing about this video is that Jonathan Gruber stated, quite forthrightly, that the decision to deny subsidies to federal exchange policies was deliberate, and designed to push states into starting their own exchanges. That is… extremely unhelpful to the current Democratic narrative.

Dermer Slams CNN’s Israeli-Palestinian Coverage: You Do Your Viewers a Disservice

Israeli ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer slammed CNN for its coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict Thursday on OutFront, telling host Erin Burnett the network did a disservice to viewers by not providing facts and context in their reports on the violence there.
The latest example came with the story of 16 people killed in a U.N. hospital in Gaza during an strike. Although Israel was blamed for the hit, the Israeli military said the attack could very well have come from Hamas in a misfired rocket, and Burnett asked whether Dermer knew more on the matter.
Dermer reminded Burnett Hamas has been using schools, hospitals and other non-military installations as weapon depots.
“It would be a disservice to your viewers for a reporter from Gaza not to mention that in the last week we had two different UNRWA schools where we had actually rockets found in the schools and handed over to Hamas,” he said.
Dermer grew angrier when he mentioned he’d watched two hours of CNN and not heard a single reporter tell the viewers of this practice.
“I have not heard a single person say what I just said to you now, and I think that that does a disservice to your viewers to not give them the context they need to make these judgments,” he said. “Hamas is placing missile batteries in schools, in hospitals, in mosques, and there must be outrage by the world at Hamas to end this.”
Dermer’s criticism comes as part of a larger pattern of outrage against media coverage of the conflict that has been sympathetic toward the Palestinians, when it was the Hamas terrorist organization that started the conflict, is confirmed to use its own citizens as human shields and has refused multiple attempts to agree to ceasefires.
“I’m blaming the media for not connecting the dots,” Dermer said. “The dots point to the responsibility of Hamas for using schools as weapons depots and caches for hamas. It’s unacceptable, and the outrage of the world has to be turned on Hamas.”

Let's Help The KURDS Fight ISIS terrorists

UN official: ISIS planning widespread female genital mutilation in Mosul, Iraq.

Barbarians (if the story is true, of course):
A top UN official in Iraq has said the Sunni Islamist group Isis controlling the city of Mosul is seeking to impose female genital mutilation.
All females aged 11 and 46 in the northern city must undergo the procedure, according to an Isis edict, UN official Jacqueline Badcock said.
She said the unprecedented decree was of grave concern.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m pretty much at the point where I want our government to go tell the Kurds that they can simply keep whatever territory they take back from ISIS.  As I recall, Mosul is traditional Kurdish territory, and clearly it could use a change in ownership. And that’s even if this particular story turns out to be false: we already know that ISIS is committing war crimes.  I see no reason why they should have free rein to commit any more.

Russia Firing Artillery Across Border at Ukrainian Military

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States said on Thursday that Russia was firing artillery across the border into Ukraine to target Ukrainian military positions in the conflict against pro-Russian separatists.
“We have new evidence that the Russians intend to deliver heavier and more powerful multiple rocket launchers to the separatist forces in Ukraine, and have evidence that Russia is firing artillery from within Russia to attack Ukrainian military positions,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said.
Harf, speaking at a regular media briefing, said the information was based on intelligence reports. “I can’t tell you what the information is based on,” she said.

House moves closer to lawsuit against President Obama

The House on Thursday moved one step closer to passing a resolution allowing the House to sue President Barack Obama for failing to properly implement Obamacare.
The House Rules Committee approved a final draft of the resolution in a partisan 7-4 vote.  That will allow the House to consider the resolution and pass it as early as next week.
The House Rules Committee, run by Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas), approved a resolution allowing the House to sue President Barack Obama for failing to properly implement Obamacare. The committee action means a vote by the full House could come next week. Win McNamee/Getty Images
The resolution authorizes Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) to either start or intervene in a civil action against Obama in a federal court for the failure of the administration to implement the health care law. It allows those actions to seek “appropriate relief” for that failure.
Before approving the final version of the resolution, the Rules Committee approved an amendment from Rep. Richard Nugent (R-Fla.) that would require the House to report on associated costs of these civil actions each quarter.
But the GOP-run committee rejected 11 other amendments from Democrats, all in party-line votes. Those amendments sought to require more frequent reporting on the costs of lawsuits brought by the House, ban the hiring of law firms that lobby Congress, put other limits on the suits that might be brought.
Republicans have noted that Obama has made numerous changes to the law unilaterally, without going through Congress in a process that might have allowed the GOP to seek its own changes to the controversial health care law. While many GOP members say Obama has acted lawlessly in other areas, such as immigration, GOP leaders decided to write a resolution that only allows legal action against Obama’s implementation of Obamacare.
Still, the GOP says the resolution is a good first step toward reining in Obama’s decisions to operate without input from Congress.
“Unfortunately, the president has ignored the requirements of the Constitution,” Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (R-Texas) said. “Instead, he has selectively enforced the law in some instances, ignored it in others, and at times changed statutes forever.
“In these ways, the president has repeatedly encroached on Congress’s power to write the law.”

N.C. Woman Loses Obamacare Coverage Despite Making Full Payments

Obamacare continues to leave Americans disgruntled and frustrated.
Jenna Davis is a hard working full-time student who recently has had her healthcare coverage dropped due to Obamacare.
She thought Obamacare would provide her with affordable healthcare, but has run into more problems than she could have ever imagined.
“I was very upset- very frustrated. I felt slightly cheated, like they were purposely trying to do something to keep me from having insurance. That’s really how I felt,” said Davis.
Her insurance broker, Alex Mercer says he has up to 30 different customers dealing with Obamacare cancellation issues. The main problem with the health insurance coverage his clients are purchasing is the payment process. Each time his clients attempt to pay their bill, they are dropped from coverage.
“It kind of defeats the whole purpose of what the law was about of helping those that need financial assistance to get their healthcare insurance. They’re simply getting hung in the wind a little bit after it’s being dropped,” Mercer told WECT.

Israel he's rights

Reminder: Israel has a right to defend itself. And no obligation to be a fool about it, either.

This conversation between Sally Kohn and Guy Benson on the possibly meritorious aspects of violence – specifically, this particular exchange:
.@guypbenson and drawing distinctions between “good” violence vs “bad” violence is morally righteous!!??? Not according to my faith…
— Sally Kohn (@sallykohn) July 22, 2014

.@sallykohn Really? So the ‘violence’ of, say, fighting off a rapist is morally indiscernable from the rapist’s actions? — Guy Benson (@guypbenson) July 22, 2014

…reminds me of, all things, a Harry Turtledove story called “The Last Article.” Basically, it’s an alternate history story where the Nazis won World War II and took over India from the British. (Spoiler warning) The Nazis then encounter Gandhi, who promptly starts up a nonviolent resistance to the occupation: the Nazis just as promptly take Gandhi out back and kills him. End of story, have a nice day. Because that’s what happens when Evil faces off Good and Good refuses to defend itself. Evil shoots Good in the head and goes on to have a delicious lunch*.
I should also note that one of the themes of this particular story – and, really, recent Middle Eastern history – is that you can only use tactics incorporating shame and appeals to better nature to people and entities willing to admit to either. Hamas clearly feels no shame or remorse about routinely violating the laws of war, not least because the group knows that there are any number of ethically deprived idiots in the West that are willing to excuse any of Hamas’s excesses. And until the aforementioned idiots either wise up or (more likely) treated the way by civilized society in the same way that we treat avowed Nazis, Hamas will continue to feel neither shame nor remorse. This is an obvious thing.  So is the fact that Israel feels no particular obligation to commit suicide simply because the antiwar Left would quite like it to.

*Of particular interest in that story was when the Nazi Governor-General delays Gandhi’s execution briefly to thank Gandhi for advocating that the Jews of Europe embrace nonviolence to the point of massacre (something that actually happened in our own history), on the grounds that it probably helped slightly the Nazis’ goal of exterminating all the Jews that they could find.  …Gandhi was very lucky that he had monster-killers as opponents in his political struggle, and not the monsters themselves.

Sounds like more stupid big government

Dems want to give government power over company work schedules

Democrats in the House and Senate are proposing new changes to the law that would allow workers to make requests about their work schedule without fear of retaliation from their bosses, and in some cases would require companies to accept these requests.
The Schedules That Work Act would also allow the Department of Labor to investigate when companies fail to adhere to these new rules. That includes subpoena power, and the power to force companies to pay workers damages when they are found to be in violation.
Democrats want to ensure food service workers like these in New York have the power to request schedule changes, and have proposed a bill allowing federal enforcement of that right. (AP Photo/Mike Groll, File)
The bill was introduced by Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), and by Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) and more than two dozen other Democrats in the House.
Under their bill, workers would have a right to make requests about their schedules, and companies would be prohibited from retaliating against them. The bill would require companies to consider these requests and provide an explanation if they are denied.
“Certain requests will have some extra consideration: if an employee makes a request because of caregiving duties, to deal with a serious health condition, to take a career-related training or education course, or to meet the demands of a second job in the case of part-time workers, then an employer must have a bona fide business reason to deny the request,” Harkin said.
The bill would also require companies to pay retail, food service and janitorial workers when they’re required to report in or be on call. Harkin said for example that if a worker is scheduled for at least four hours and reports in, he must be paid for those hours.
The Labor Department would have the authority to enforce these rules under the Fair Labor Standards Act. It would require companies to keep records of compliance, and allow Labor to inspect those records once per year, or more frequently if a violation is suspected.
Harkin said the bill is needed because workers in the service industries in particular can be given erratic schedules designed without their input, which can keep them from family events and can make it hard to predict their income.
“Schedules are often made with no input from workers or consideration for family needs or even sleep time,” Harkin said Tuesday. “A worker may have 8 hours of work one week, 24 hours the next week, and no hours for the next two weeks.
“These abusive scheduling practices mean that workers often can’t predict their income, which makes it very difficult to budget and pay bills. It also wreaks havoc on family life. Working parents can’t be home for family dinner, help with afternoon homework, or put kids to bed.”

US intel: MH17 missile an SA-11 fired from eastern Ukraine

"We’re going to continue to pull the thread on this case to determine exactly who we believe fired that missile."
A public briefing from US intelligence unveiled a compelling circumstantial case that the responsibility for the shootdown of Malaysia Air Flight 17 lies with Ukrainian rebels or their Russian allies. The intelligence has located the spot where the SA-11 system was fired, and has confirmed that Ukrainian rebels bragged about hitting what they thought was […]

IRS: Hey, maybe we do have our e-mail backups

Cummings: Leave John Koskinen alone!
Does the IRS actually have their backups for e-mail from the period when Lois Lerner and her group targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny on tax-exempt applications? The agency claimed a month ago that it overwrote the tapes every six months, in one of the most notorious (and unsuccessful) Friday afternoon document dumps ever. New testimony […]

White House ignoring Congress on key foreign policy decisions

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee on Monday accused the Obama administration of completely shutting Congress out of major foreign policy decisions, including how to deal with Russia’s aggression on the Ukraine border, and the delayed Iran nuclear talks.
Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) said the White House has not reached out to Congress in any meaningful way on Russia, and totally ignored Congress’s advice not to extend the Iran nuclear talks.

“There’s not a robust engagement the way that we were used to on really sensitive national security issues,” Rogers said on Fox and Friends Monday morning.
Rogers said that last week, White House officials brief members on the Iran nuclear talks, and were told by most that the talks should not be extended.
“[E]verybody there said, why are you giving them more money, you shouldn’t do it,” he said. “The next day they announced they’re giving more money.”
The four-month extension of the nuclear talks will give Russia access to another $2.8 billion in assets that were frozen by the United States. Secretary of State John Kerry defended the move by saying sanctions will remain in place against Iranian oil sales while talks continue on the fate of Iran’s nuclear program.
Still, Rogers said most in Congress were clearly opposed to the extension, and said the White House has no interest in taking advice from members.
“There has been a bipartisan push that I’ve really not seen in Congress in a long time, pushing back on the president’s foreign policy,” he said. “And they have an absolute tin ear.”
On the situation in Ukraine, Rogers blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for contributing to violence along the border that led to the downing of a Malaysian passenger jet.
“This is an unmitigated tragedy where he’s really massacred 295 people by playing fast and loose with these weapons systems,” Rogers said. Many, including officials within the Obama administration, are blaming Russia for making available the high-end missile system needed to shoot down the plane from 33,000 feet.
Rogers called on the administration to start building up a missile defense system in the Czech Republican and in Poland, and to perform military training in Poland to show Russia the U.S. is serious. He said that could rally the Europeans around tighter sanctions against Russia.
“He will understand certainty and strength,” Rogers said. “Right now, we don’t either of those.”

What Happened To the IRS IT Asset Management Team?

An Ohio-based trade association, the International Association of Information Technology Asset Managers (IAITAM), wants to know why the IRS’s IT Asset Managers have apparently “disappeared at a key juncture.”
IAITAM administers internationally accepted certifications for information technology professionals, and according to their records “at least three IT Asset Managers…were working at the IRS prior to the 13 May 2013 Inspector General Report [that detailed the IRS abuse of conservative political groups].”
However, IAITAM claims in a press release Monday that those workers “were shuffled out from those positions around the time of the report.” The group’s president, Dr. Barbara Rembiesa, urged Congress and the investigators from the Department of Justice to “determine if these in-house IT Asset Managers were removed from the picture as the IRS email investigation heated up.”
Rembiesa also questions whether Lois Lerner used a BlackBerry device to send email, as many federal employees do, since use of a BlackBerry might have inadvertently preserved the supposedly lost data.
Until the IRS provides documentation that Lerner’s hard drive was wiped or destroyed, Rembiesa says the hard drives “should be considered lost, not destroyed.”

Congressman Tweets an Obama Failure Every Half Hour; Up to 85 and Counting

(Red Alert Politics) – Rep. Trent Franks from Arizona must have woken up Wednesday with a lot on his mind. Luckily in times like that, Twitter is always there for you.
Franks took to his official Twitter page to begin a list of #ObamaFailures. Every 30 minutes he tweets another failure to add to the list and will continue to do so until they are “100 percent listed.”
“Unfortunately, as Chairman of the Constitution Subcommittee in Congress, I have seen this President abrogate his duty and sworn oath to the Constitution in nearly every conceivable way — and in a few inconceivable ways,” Franks said in a statement to Red Alert Politics. “The average American wouldn’t even have time to listen to a list of every failed policy and scandal if I were to take to the House floor and deliver them as a speech. Twitter allows a bit more leeway, in that regard.”
SEND CONGRESS A PINK SLIP: Gun grabs, Martial Law, amnesty, executive orders, unconstitutional laws, bypassing Congress and the Constitution— Obama has committed a string high crimes and misdemeanors. YOU can send a PINK SLIP to every member of Congress putting them on notice: “IMPEACH OBAMA NOW OR WE’RE KICKING YOU OUT!”
The tweets began with Franks commenting about Obama “ignoring generals’ advice and giving up blood bought gains in Iraq to ISIS,” and has escalated from there. Here are some of the most retweeted items on the list:

Franks said that his tweets are sent out with two goals in mind. “One, to attempt to list as many of the backwards, radical policies of this Administration are on record in one place, and two, to demonstrate the sometimes difficult truth that elections really do have consequences.”
There is no telling how many more #ObamaFailures Franks has up his sleeve, but in his words, “this may take awhile.”
